Itanagar, May 5: The mortal remains of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, who died in a helicopter crash on Saturday, was today flown to state capital Itanagar as a pall of gloom descended over the entire state following the shocking news.

The body will be kept in the CM’s official residence till tomorrow, before it is flown back to Tawang for cremation at Khandu's native village there as per Buddhist rituals. The date of cremation is yet to be decided.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will fly to Itanagar to pay their last respects.
The state government has announced seven days mourning.
All Central Government offices in Arunachal Pradesh would remain closed tomorrow.

Earlier, Khandu’s body was flown to Tawang early this morning by an IAF chopper after it was transferred to Luguthang helipad by ground search parties.
IAF spokesperson Wing Cdr Ranjib Sahoo told UNI from Shillong that Chettah helicopters were used to ferry the bodies from Luguthang to Tawang.

Our Reporter in Tawang adds that entire Tawang descended at heliport and later at district hospital to have a last glimpse of their leader. Inconsolable citizens are yet to come to terms with the fact that their leader is dead. After the body was flown to Itanagar, there has been an absolute silence in the town.
Meanwhile, the body of Chief Minister’s security officer Dy SP Yeishi Chodak was identified by his friends and family members. His mortal remains was later handed over to his family members. His last rights would be carried out in Tawang tomorrow.
The charred bodies of the pilots could not be identified as both shared the same blood group. The bodies which were taken over by the army have been sent to Guwahati from where they would be sent back to their respective places after identification.
Efforts are on to retrieve the black box of the chopper.
Jarbom Gamlin takes over Khandu’s mantle

Considered one of the closest confidantes of the Late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, Gamlin was chosen after a marathon meeting which started at four this evening at the Congress Headquarters.
Legislators were interviewed individually by Union ministers BK Handique, V Narayansamy, Mukul Wasnik and Salman Khursheed, a source said. It is understood that of the 41 Congress MLAs, 29 of them said yes to the candidature of Gamlin as the Chief Minister.
Later, a single line resolution by the CLP was faxed to the All India Congress Committee president.
Briefing the media after the swearing in ceremony, new Chief Minister assured to fulfill the unfinished developmental activities carried out by the former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu.
He further said that, enquiry committee would be constituted to unearth the chopper crash that claimed the lives of Khandu and four others.
Born on 18 April 1961, Gamlin represented the state as a Lok Sabha MP during 1999-

ITANAGAR, May 5: Various organisations have condoled the death of Dorjee Khandu, the Late Chief Minister of Arunachal.
Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee and Congress Legislature Party in a resolution at its condolence meeting held at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan today deeply mourned the sad demise of Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and his security officer Yeshi Chodak, teacher Yeshi Lhamu and two pilots Captian T S Mallik and J S Babbar who lost their lives in tragic chopper mishap on April 30.
APCC in its condolence message said ‘his humble beginnings are perhaps the best example for the ideals he stood for himself in his hard work and dedication. Today, as we mourn his death, we must not think how he died, but how he lived. His life should be held a measure for the fortitude of the human spirit, he has given hope to every person of the state. He has shown us that with honesty, loyalty and commitment, one may achieve everything that the world offers,” the APCC said.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) organized a condolence meeting today at its headquarter Nefa Club Building and prayed for the eternal peace of Late Khandu’s soul and four others.
AAPSU fondly remembered his long association with the apex student body of the state and described the Late chief minister as a man of pleasant and accommodative nature.
“In spite of many disagreements over matter of policies, he was man of great audacity and never shut the door to the views and suggestion put forth by the student community of the state. He will also be remembered by the student community for bringing drastic education reform in the state, the man who gave us the “Historic Education Bill’’. His elderly guidance will be sorely missed in the days to come,” AAPSU said in a release. The union also prayed to almighty for giving strength to the bereaved family members.
“Late Khandu would be remembered for changing the face of Arunachal Pradesh by infusing massive developmental packages, the state had witnessed never before,” Nyishi Elite Society (NES) said.

“He was a man of simplicity and commitment. He was also a man of vision and a good planner. He had a vision to see Arunachal Pradesh, the richest state in the country and he worked hard towards that goal. He also stood for the Peace and Unity of all tribes and communities in the State. The minister also deeply mourned the death of Yashi Lhamu, Yashi Choddak and the pilots who lost their lives in chopper mishap.

ITANAGAR, May 5: East Siang District Industries Centre conducted a two days sensitization programme on aggressive development and promotion of NER crafts (IGS) at Mebo on April three and four.
The main objective of the programme was to develop entire North East as a unified cluster and centre for excellence and it was sponsored by the National Centre for Design and Product Development, New Delhi. Experts from Bamboo and Cane Development Institute, Agartala, Dr Abhinav Kant and Dr Ram Pandey were the resource persons in the programme which was participated by prospective entrepreneurs and local artisans. According to an FIR lodged in Kanubari police station, the accused (24 years) appeared in the police colony at around 6.30 pm, lured the baby with two packets of chips and picked her up. After committing the heinous crime, he dropped her back at police colony at around 7.30. However, sensing trouble, the accused ran away from his native village immediately.
Acting on a tip off the Police team of Kanabari P S conducted search operation and arrested him in the wee hours of May 4. The accused was produced before the first class judicial magistrate Kanubari today and the court remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.
The parents of the victim also apprised the Women Commission of the incident for necessary action.

Connectivity key to avoid 1962 like situation

After the last Chinese Aggression of 1962, Late Chief Minister of Assam, Bimala Prasad Chaliha sponsored a Goodwill team in 1963 and also a Health team in 1964 to Arunachal Pradesh, then NEFA. I was lucky to lead the team of All Guwahati Students Union to Pasighat and Medical College students to Zero. We had tracked from Pasighat to a remote village, Yagrung and also to some nearby areas. We were told by our guide that the 12 mile track that we were passing through was in fact a 22 wide motorable road in the map!
I went to Tawang in 2001 on a holiday from Tezpur and had to stay overnight at Bomdila

Today my heart shed tears in quiet when the news flashed in the TV screen that the body of the Chief Minister was finally found after five days of search at a height of 4900 meters. I fondly remember his gesture while presenting me a local Arunachali dress during my last visit. Along with lakhs of admirer, I express my heartfelt condolence for the departed Chief Minister, Late Dorjee Khandu.
We have reports time and again that China has built excellent network of road on the other side of McMahon line and a motorable road almost to the foothill of Mt. Everest. We also have reports that China has built eight aerodromes in Tibet in recent times. Like China, even India claims itself to be a superpower country, then why can’t we present this beautiful Arunachal Pradesh with enhanced network of surface road to the Arunachalies, the army and the tourists to explore this paradise unexplored!
One never knows a day might come like in 1962 when some leader in Delhi will say

Centre can’t treat us

While many big shots claims that Arunachal is an integral and inalienable part of India, so all I want to ask is, “really, prove it!!!” because I truly believe that action speaks louder than words. Our beloved CM's demise could have been avoided or at least the rescue team could have been deployed.
The central government when they claim so proudly that Arunachal is indeed an integral
part of India then why this step-
At this point I’m personally so enraged and upset that I’m not scared anymore if China claims that Arunachal is theirs. I don’t think that central government could treat us any worse than this.

Where is the Black Box?

I wonder whether the Black Box was recovered from the spot of accident. it should be handed over to an inquiry committee appointed by the DGCA or send the black box to the NTSB, the independent US Federal government agency proficient in investigating aviation accidents to know the cause of the crash. Everyone please request the govt to find the Black Box if it’s still missing.

Dear Editor,
While conveying its heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family of the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Dorjee Khandu, whose body was found on 4th May by some village volunteers, Arunachal Citizens’ Rights express its profound grief on the sudden and untimely demise of an energetic and dynamic Chief Minister. It is not only a loss for the people of Arunachal Pradesh, but also a loss of an able and farsighted leader for the whole of the North East.
However, ACR feels that questions regarding serious lapses on the part of all those concerned for the safety of the Chief Minister should be raised.
Firstly, It’s surprising to note how such an important person as the Chief Minister of a state was let to board a single engine helicopter in a high altitude mountainous terrain like Tawang where the climate is perennially cloudy with visibility of not beyond a few hundred meters only, and that too with only a single security officer to accompany him.
Next, whereas the helicopter with the Chief Minister onboard was reported missing at around 11.15 am, an indecisive cabinet met only after 7pm. What were these decision makers doing all this while for almost eight hours? Meantime, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, committed the gravest act of misconduct by irresponsibly airing false statements saying that all was well and the helicopter had landed safely with all the passengers onboard somewhere in Bhutan. Such grave lapses are not expected from the first citizen of the state and needs to be addressed by the proper authority. ACR urges the Government of India to call back the Governor from the state without further delay.
It should also be noted that both the State Government sources and media reports indicated that the ATC Guwahati lost contact with the helicopter after 20 minutes of take off while crossing Sela Pass. Why this was not reported immediately to the appropriate authority? Why the news came trickling in only after the CM’s helicopter did not reach Naharlugun on schedule?
The supposed telephonic conversation of Yashi Tsering with the Chief Minister, the Commissioner to the Chief Minister after the report of the helicopter gone missing, has become reasonable grounds to suspect the circumstances of the tragic death of Chief Minister. Was our CM alive and did make that call? What happened afterwards? Was there not one accident or a series of incidents leading to the crash and the tragic death of five people?
Who was responsible for the media report that CM’s chopper made an emergency landing in eastern Bhutan; was safe and will be touching Guwahati for refueling on its way back to Itanagar on the same day?
ACR, therefore, urges the Centre to constitute a high level enquiry committee to find out the circumstances of the Chief Minister’s death, and people responsible for related lapses, with members drawn from both the state and the central governments and involving the civil society.
ACR appreciates the efforts made by the Centre; however, Indian technology has miserably failed to trace out the Chief Minister of a state even after five days despite using latest super technologies, including satellites, GPS, remote sensing etc, and engaging the ISRO for which crores of money might have been spent not to speak of the numerous army columns. The suspected helicopter crash image identified through satellite was somewhere in Naga GG, bordering Dirang and Bhutan, which is very far from the actual crash site called Luguthang, could be actually responsible for misguiding the ground search operations. It also shows that there is complete lack of understanding of the topography of Arunachal despite the fact that this is a sensitive frontier state contested by China. It is ironical that the army, which is stationed to defend the land from possible Chinese intrusion, has no clue about the topography to be defended.
Now question remains that if even the democratically elected Chief Minister of the state who disappeared in a helicopter couldn’t be traced out even after five days, then how would India locate and deal with situations in case enemies march in and spread out in this mountainous region. One can imagine what the outcome may be in five days? Or, for that, will India just surrender its territorial integrity and the people of Arunachal Pradesh in the pretext of bad weather and hilly mountainous terrain?
This tragic incident has generated a sense of alienation and feeling of insecurity among the indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh and is reason enough to unrest amongst our people, and the youth in particular.

Weather constrains aside, it does not auger well for India
Dear Editor,
What has happened to our CM and the rest in that chopper is really sad and unfortunate. I had been following the developments like all Arunachalees since that fateful day and now I feel that I had been misguided by so called “massive search operations". The expression sounds really big on paper and as a verbal volley; but pragmatically did it come anywhere near?? It took 5 days to clear the air regarding the entire disturbing and clueless scenario; weather constraints aside, does this augur well for the centre and state government?
Its ironical our country boasts of being a technological powerhouse. This incident must have shaken our people. Just imagine the horror of dead bodies lying there in those mountains for so many days, charred beyond recognition.
It sends a chill down ones spine only pray that no one is doomed to such a fate. May the departed souls rest in peace and god give their families enough strength to endure this difficult phase.

Say no to killer flying machine

Dear Editor,
While I mourn the death of our beloved chief minister, I would rather make my clear cut opinion about the Pawan Hans service in our state. Since, from the past history of the Pawan Hans services it will be appropriate to say "no more Pawan Hans, killer flying machine".
Come one and all and raise our hands against this old flying coffin manufacturer.
And my sincere request to our state government is to abandon PHHL and incorporate the best helicopter service provider in India.

Dear Editor,
While expressing my deep grief over the demise of our beloved CM, I would like to ask a very simple question to all the those responsible people in power, that if it took almost 5 days to trace the body of the head of state, that is also with full swing, then what would be the fate of a ordinary civilian, if an accident like this repeat itself?
I think it would take around one month or so to trace without ISRO's help, with normal mathematical calculation.
The point here is why isn't our state prepared for such extreme disasters? We have lost many visionaries through such crashes. And if the system is not improved even after the loss of our state's CM, then all we can do is pray for some miracles.
May the concern authority open their partially blind eyes so that those flying machines will stop taking lives.

With throbbing heart I extend my condolences to the people, kiths and kin of late Chief Minister.
I request your esteemed newspaper to ensure that a proper court of inquiry is conducted by the Govt. by special team to ascertain the reasons behind this tragic incident.
There may be bad weather clubbed with reasons beyond our imagination because Late Chief Minister had strong stand against Chinese claims over Arunachal territory.
Therefore involvement of Chinese army has to be ascertained. A forensic report on the debris of chopper can bring out such matters clearly and it has to be analyzed by expert tem in DRDO. The concluding report will be "due to bad weather" but I admired Dorjee Khandu and his departure is a heavy loss to people of Arunachal Pradesh.
